Named for the county in Tennessee where most of the original settlers originated citizens established as a community in the late 1840s. In contrast to Hurst, Bedford was a booming town by the 1880s. This was due to the impressive number of businesses, as well as the college founded in 1882.
The first white settlers arrived in the present day city of Bedford in the 1850s. The first school in the settlement area was built in 1862. In the year 1877, a post office was opened in the region and the community was named Bedford. The town of Bedford was incorporated in 1953. At that time, Bedford's population was just 475.
